| This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: | God expects us to use our brains, especially to detect deceit. Our reference standard for truth is singular —Scripture. Without this accurate record of history we would have no way to know which origins story is the truth. Once we begin to believe that Scripture "must be interpreted in the light of science" we effectively place God's words under the authority of man-made knowledge and we say with the crucifiers, "We will not have this truth to rule over us!" |
| Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, | Scoffers mimic opponents to intimidate and embarrass. They are so confident because they believe their replacement view is superior. |
| walking after their own lusts, | Guilt drives us to remove any Judge from our thinking. Rather than repent, lust leads the guilty to rationalize away the Judge. The inescapable evidence for our coming Maker is creation. It must be reinterpreted. |

And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? |
Once the flood judgment of the Bible is denied there is no tangible evidence of God's past global wrath that should warn us of a second coming worse judgment on the whole world. |
| for since the fathers fell asleep, | These are not the patriarchs of Scripture. They are Piltdown Man, Lucy, Neanderthal, etc. etc. |
| all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. |
Uniformitarian Geology that says the past is a record of slow processes over long ages, has replaced Catastrophism, that says the history of the earth is short and violent. |
| For this they willingly are ignorant of, | Deliberate ignorance is the consequence of false preconceptions that drive the insatiable need to "prove" evolution and propagate the lie. |

The real target is the eternal authority of Scripture that will judge us after man's best ideas are burned up. |
| the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: | Prior to the flood, a canopy of water vapour was above the earth (Gen 1:6) and water was buried in the earth. Both inundated the surface causing the flood. |
| Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: | The best evidence claimed for evolution is the fossil record, but scientifically it is better evidence for a global flood. But evolution cannot allow the recent flood described in Genesis —it would have destroyed any evidence for long ages and deposited its own fossil evidence. |
| But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. | God's wrath against all ungodliness is vital to the Gospel. Wise men fear God and believe. God left frightening evidence of His past global wrath to warn the wise that it can and will happen again. By denying the past, scoffers deny the future. |
| But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. |
Peter says that one thing is crucial and uses a riddle to identify it. This verse has been used by many to prove the uncertainty of the time issue, but it is easy for believers to unravel. The crucial issue is God's view of time measured in thousands of years. |
